Signs of Anorexia In Teenage Girls

September 26, 2011 4:34 PM

Anorexia is an extremely dangerous disorder. Knowing the signs of anorexia can save someone’s life one day. The full name of anorexia, is Anorexia Nervosa (AN). Well how dangerous is it, you may ask? Anorexia kills ten percent of people that have it. Many teens say, “I’ll just start eating normally when I’m skinny enough!” Well, that will not be possible. When the body is only given small amounts of food, the stomach can not handle as much food. At that point, a piece of bread can make the person feel full. Often time, girls will shoot more for something with a lower calorie count than a piece of bread.

You think your teenage daughter may have anorexia? Here are some of the signs of anorexia in teenage girls.

  1. Excessive Weight Loss - This may have been what you first noticed, hopefully not.
  2. Calorie Counting - Many anorexic teenage girls, but not all, make sure they only eat 100-400 calories a day.
  3. Excessive Exercise – Low food intake is not always the only factor. Sometimes a sign of anorexia in teenage girls is exercising to much.
  4. Minding the Weight – Is she thinking about how much she is eating, almost always? Worrying about gaining weight? Anorexic girls tend to do this. It seams to be the only thing on their minds a lot of the time.
  5. Body Mass Drop – Many teenage girls with anorexia end up having 25% less body mass, compared to when they weren’t anorexic.
  6. Fearing Weight Gain - Teenage girls who are anorexic, fear gaining weight.
  7. Emotions – Gaining more weight, can make the teenage girl get emotional.
  8. Low Self-Esteem –  This tends to be a factor of what causes anorexia in teenage girls in the first place.
  9. Diet Continuation – Is she already thin, but still dieting? This may have turned into an obsession with her.
  10. Period/Menstruation - One of the signs of anorexia in teenage girls in that they may start missing their periods.
  11. Feeling Chilly - She is not getting enough food in her system. As a cause, the body has nothing to burn to keep her warm.
  12. Nausea - One of the signs of anorexia in teenage girls, is nausea when or after eating. Their body can’t handle the food so easily anymore.
  13. Body Image – She thinks she is still fat, but she isn’t. She won’t see it. Sadly, this makes her progress in anorexia, leading to death.
  14. Denial – No matter how much you tell her that she is underweight, she won’t believe it. She doesn’t see it.
  15. Avoiding Social Events – Many social events involve food. If she goes, people may try to make her eat. She knows this.
Anorexia is a serious psychological battle. Because of that, it tends to turn into a life-long one. If you have anorexia, please get help.

What Should I Eat In A Day To Lose Weight?

September 24, 2011 11:16 AM

There she was, crying her eyes out. The girl I had been with for two years, frustrated to the point of suicide. “Why won’t it go away? Whats wrong with me?!”, she cried. My heart sunk in my chest. For the past eight months, she had been on a strict diet of 900 calories a day. She worked out daily and ate almost nothing. The weight just wouldn’t go away.

This was my girl. She is driven, and doesn’t give up easily. But what was she doing wrong? Why is it that no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t just lose the damn weight?

The answer to this, was that she wan’t eating correctly. She ate chocolate pudding, she was making a cake almost every day, etc. She was doing TWO things wrong here. The first is that she was eating the wrong things, and the second was that she wan’t eating enough!

Now lets make a new start! Get those sweets out of your diet (eat them occasionally), and fill it with good food. Lets take broccoli and celery for example. These are two foods that are great for your body! If your worried about calories, use these as fillers! They have next to no calories in them. Eating them can actually burn more than you eat in the end.

When it comes to exercise, walk. Running builds muscle, walking burns fat. Walking will actually burn fat, and shrink the fat cells in your body! This will help you from gaining that weight back so easily.

So to go over this quickly one more time:

  1. Get those sweets almost completely out of your diet.
  2. Get those good foods in your diet.
  3. Walk at least three times a week if you can, for twenty minutes.
With these steps, my girl actually started losing weight! She is now, no longer afraid of getting her picture taken. She loves it! I hope this helps you out as much as it helped her. Have a great day!

The Risks of Lap Band Surgery

September 22, 2011 3:30 PM

The fact that your reading an article about the risks of lap band surgery, shows that you are looking for ways to lose weight fast. You may be frustrated with so many diets, that you feel this is the only choice left, right? Maybe your even afraid of hurting your knees from an exercise plan. Well, there are risks to lap band surgery.

Lap Band Surgery Can Kill You! No matter what precautions you take, it doesn’t mean they will save you.

Gastric Perforation occurrs in about 1% of all lap band surgeries. Gastric Perforation is a tear in the stomach wall. A second surgery is required to repair this.

Age is one of the big risks of lap band surgery. The older you are, the higher the risk is. If your going to get this procedure done, do it while your body is strong enough.

Foreign objects can sometimes be an issue. As the lap band gets put inside your body, your body may not recognise it as something that should be in there. This can make you very sick.

Medication can likely be a factor, and can be a risk in lap band surgery. If you are on medication, you may want o reconsider.

Three years after the lap band surgery, 88% of patients ended up having negative effects on their bodies. This included nausia, vometing, their band slipping out of place, etc.

After the procedure, make sure to get plenty of rest. Your body needs to recover. If you don’t you will likely just get sick.

What are the requirements for the procedure?

1. You must be 18 years or older in order to qualify for the lap band surgery.
2. You must have been over-weight for at least five years or more.
3. You must not drink excess amounts of alcohol.
4. You must have seriously done other weight loss programs, with little success.
5. You must not be pregnant! If your pregnant, I would hope your not considering doing this kind of surgery when your pregnant anyways. But lets say you do get pregnant. Don’t panic! You can get the band adjusted so that you can have the baby to.
6. Your BMI (Body Mass Index) must be at least 40. The alternative to this one, is that you must be at least 30 pounds over weight, with a BMI of 30 kg/m2.

How much does it cost?

Typically, the Lap Band surgery costs anywhere from $12,000 to $20,000. In many cases, the lap band surgery is covered by insurance!
